|
Queen Latifah was born as Dana Elaine Owens on 18 March 1970 in Newark, New Jersey, USA. Hailing from a police family - her dad and brother were cops. Before she hit the music world Latifah first worked as a Burger King employee. Latifah in Arabic means, delicate and sensitive'. True to her name she is really sensitive.
The way she fell into bouts of depression and took solace in drugs after her brother's death in a motorcycle accident in 1992 goes to prove how much she is attached to her brother, Lancelot. She was even arrested for possessing a small amount of marijuana and a loaded handgun and was fined and sentenced to two years' probation. However the strong Latifah quickly recovered from drug abuse and bouts of depression. While presenting her biography on a show, Latifah broke down into tears while speaking about her brother and his death in an accident. It was the same motorcycle that she lovingly presented to her brother that had taken his life. As a fond remembrance of her brother Latifah to this day wears the motorcycle key around her neck. Her playing the role of a lesbian in "Set it Off" has set off media speculation about her sexual orientation. Incidentally Queen Latifah stands for several gay rights issues and strongly advocates marriage between same sexes. In 2003, Latifah underwent surgery to reduce her breasts to relive her back pain.
